Hana's Suitcase
Texte : Emil Sher
Mise en scène : Stewart Arnott, based on original direction by Allen McInnis
Recommended for children ages 9 & up and adults of all ages
After an extended run following critical and audience acclaim in Toronto, Hana's Suitcase will come to Geordie' Montreal Mainstage as its Montreal stop of a national tour. Based on the popular book by Karen Levin, Hana's Suitcase tells the true story of a suitcase that was brought to Tokyo's Holocaust Education Resource Center. Painted on the side were a name, Hana Brady, a birth date and the word “Waisenkind” (orphan). The children who saw the suitcase on display were full of questions. Who was Hana Brady? What happened to her? Their curiosity led Fumiko Ishioka, the centre’s curator, on a journey across Europe and North America to find the answers.
Emil Sher’s script employs eight actors and weaves in and out of the past by using multi-media and other innovative staging techniques to trace the tragic fate of Hana and her suitcase, and the amazing survival of her only brother George who now lives in Toronto. The Globe and Mail called it “…a delicate and moving introduction to Holocaust themes for children”.
